The town of Carboneras is located on the edge of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park in the province of Almeria and is a popular tourist resort with stunning beaches, beautiful natural surroundings, a 16th century castle and delicious seafood menus. As with all of the Costa Almeria, Carboneras enjoys an ideal sub-tropical climate throughout the year. The flora and fauna are varied and abundant in the area which is also heavily visited by migrating birds such as flamingos.
The Name Carboneras translates to coal bunkers as the area was stripped of its forest and used for coal leaving the region dry and arid, which contrasts beautifully with the superb beaches. 17 kilometres of fine sand include the blue flag beach of El Ancon, the nudist beach Los Muertos, Las Marinicas and the 3 kilometre long El Agarrobico.
The town now thrives on both fishing and tourism and is a popular holiday destination with its stunning beaches, charming town, good amenities and interesting cultural attractions.
The 16th century fortified castle dominates the town, as do the two watchtowers that date from the 16th and 18th centuries. There is a lovely promenade with an excellent variety of restaurants excelling in seafood dishes from where you can take an easy stroll to the lighthouse at Mesa Roldan. From here which you can take in some wonderful views of the coastline.
Market day is Thursday, where you can purchase some delicious local produce as well as household goods and clothing. Fiestas are celebrated with great gusto here and draw crowds from far afield.
The coastal towns of Mojacar and Garrucha are an easy drive away and well worth a visit. The entire region of Cabo de Gata is an area of outstanding beauty, and you can spend days exploring the area’s beaches, bays and villages.
