Local Area
Huercal Overa is a large market town on the border of the provinces of Almeria and Murcia situated in the picturesque Valley of Almanzora. The town hall administers to villages, hamlets and farms in the surrounding area of 213 square miles, most of which is agricultural, at a height of 920 feet above sea level.
The town boasts one of the top rated hospitals in Spain and is well connected to the motorway, being only an hour’s drive to Almeria and Murcia airports and is located twenty to thirty minutes from the beautiful coastal resorts of Vera, Mojácar, Garrucha and San Juan de los Terreros. The centre of the town is a mixture of old and new with a huge variety of supermarkets, shops and chemists. Monday is the main market day, which is held on the high street, and a smaller fruit and vegetable market near to the old church on a Thursday.
Huercal Overa also has a very modern theatre and attracts National and International performers. There is a small cinema and many cafe bars, bakeries and restaurants where you can sample local recipes and cuisine. It's annual fair is held over the third weekend in October every year with many local and national fiestas and cultural entertainments interspersed throughout the rest of the year.
